History of Garage Doors

Few projects can improve your home’s curb appeal as quickly and affordably as new garage doors

Whether you are building a home or it’s time to replace your 20 year old garage doors, there are many styles available that will best compliment your home.  Replacing  your garage doors is one of the best home improvement projects when it comes to cost vs. value and also will increase your home’s resale value.

Early Garage Doors

The earliest garage doors date back thousands of years.  The original garage doors were considered carriage house doors which swung outward.  These doors often included Z and X shaped designs that strengthened the door and distributed their weight.  The problem with these doors was if it was snowing or the door was blocked, they would not open.  These  doors wore down quickly and often required regular replacement.  Sectional doors soon appeared.  C.G. Johnson invented the first overhead  door in 1921 as well as the first electric door opener in 1926.

Today’s Garage Doors

Garage doors have come along way in design and construction and, interestingly enough, many of today’s homeowners are now seeking out that carriage house style look.  These modern doors imitate the early “swing out” doors, except today’s carriage house doors have the now traditional overhead operation.
